Headshot of Kara Segal

Kara Segal is a Research Manager at the California Policy Lab where she manages CPL’s labor and employment portfolio.

With a focus on economic inequality, Kara’s previous work has ranged from public policy analysis to launching priority government initiatives. Most recently, she served as Chief of Staff at Inequality Media with Robert Reich, creating digital media to educate people about structural issues facing the American economy.

At the Berkeley Institute for Young Americans, she conducted research on building a more equitable tax code — with special attention to tax loopholes and regressive deductions — and alleviating the student loan debt crisis. For the City of New York, she managed programs serving low-income and immigrant entrepreneurs and built support for employee-owned businesses and fair labor practices.

Kara’s background also includes teaching and community organizing. She has taught in New York City public schools, facilitated social justice training programs, and moonlighted as an Occupy Wall Street activist.

Kara has an MPP from the UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy, a BA in Education Studies from Brown University, and is a former Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. She is also an avid crossword puzzler and loves to kick a ball around on the soccer field.
