Opening Plenary: Racial Justice and the Policy Lifecycle: What Have We Learned from the Policy Response to Racial Inequities in the United States over Time?
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
APPAM Virtual Fall Research Conference – Room 1
Moderator: Sherry Glied, New York University
Speakers: Bradley Hardy, American University; Rucker Johnson, University of California, Berkeley***; David Konisky, Indiana University; Javier Rodriguez, Claremont Graduate University
Over the past half century, there have been multiple policy efforts to address racial inequities across education, housing, environmental quality, health, income support, and other areas of social policy. The design, implementation, and effects of these policies have been a regular subject of policy analysis. In this plenary roundtable, speakers will assess what we have learned about what has and has not worked to promote racial justice across these areas. They will describe how (or whether) the lessons of prior policy analyses have informed subsequent policy development and discuss what lessons those analyses offer for the future of initiatives to address racial justice.
